Week of June 8

Monday

When you are reading a good book, you need a cold and sweet drink!

Try this Fizzy Lemonade out!

You need: 2 Lemons, Cold water, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon sugar (this will make the lemonade sweet. If you don’t want it too sweet, use less sugar), Glass, Spoon and Ice

Squeeze the lemons into a glass. Try to squeeze as much juice as possible.

  1. Pour in an equal amount of cold water.
  2. Stir in a teaspoon of baking soda.
  3. Stir in the sugar if you want sweet lemonade and add the ice if you’re using it.

Baking soda is an alkaline. Lemon juice is an acid. When you add the two together, acid-base reaction happens. The reaction gives off carbon dioxide, which produces bubbles.

Experiment with adding more or less baking soda, to get the fizziness just right.

Fun Facts:

Dav Pilkey, the author of Captain Underpants had this idea when he was just in second grade. The main characters, Harold and George, are named after two characters from other well-known children’s books. Harold’s name came from Harold and the Purple Crayon and George’s name came from Curious George.

Green Eggs and Ham has only 50 words in it. Author Theodor Seuss Geisel took a dare from his editor that he could not write a book with only 50 words.  It turned out he could and he won the bet!
